What a vehicle impact actually does to a house

A vehicle into a structure looks like a simple loss: there’s a hole, and the instinct is to scope the hole. But impact is an energy-transfer event, and the energy doesn’t stop at the drywall. It moves through the framing: into the header over the opening, into the studs and top plate on either side, into the wall that shares a corner, and up into whatever the struck wall was holding. The visible breach is where the force entered. The loss is wherever that force went.

The first question that changes everything is whether the struck wall carries load. Hit a non-bearing partition and the damage is largely contained to the opening. Hit a bearing wall, a header, or a post, and the structure above (floor framing, roof load, the wall on the second story) now depends on a member that just took an impact. That has to be assessed and documented, because a scope that treats a bearing-wall hit like a cosmetic one is missing the actual risk in the building.

Then there’s what the impact reached below and beside it. A vehicle that strikes a foundation wall, a garage knee wall, or the edge of a slab can shift or crack the concrete, and that movement telegraphs through the structure as racked door and window openings and fresh cracks in rooms away from the impact. Utilities are the other quiet hazard: gas, electrical, and water lines run inside walls, and when the point of impact is near them, their condition is a documentation item to capture up front, not a surprise waiting inside the demolition.

Most vehicle impacts in New England hit garages, porches, and front corners: attached structures where a bearing condition, a fire-separation assembly, and a utility run can all sit within a few feet of each other. That combination is exactly why the loss deserves more than a scope of the opening.
